Rejoining the World

Today we celebrate the end of my crazy Spring semester. I still have deadlines coming up, but the extremely ambitious bunch of paper submissions and class commitments has ended and now life will be more balanced. I hope to get the pictures of the day going again this evening. For now here's a photo from last week. I took Friday off from working just to spend with Rowan, and we had a picnic on the deck complete with our first watermelon of the year. Yummmm. We also rode far into the state park (I completed a record 12.3 miles with Rowan in the bike trailer, and managed to get us both back inside the house without collapsing). Pictures of that adventure will be coming soon; we made it to a very scenic lake. Anyway, happy Tuesday everyone!

A Little Technical Difficulty

Well, howdee everyone. As you might've noticed, I haven't resumed pictures of the day as soon as I had hoped. I'll confess to having a few technical difficulties: I got a new laptop, and the photo transfer process (actually photo software switching process too) isn't going as seamlessly as I had hoped. Not to mention the camera on which I took some of those great lake pictures I teased...its battery died before I could upload the pictures. And one thing this Mac doesn't have is a card reader. So, we have to wait for the thing to charge. There will be pictures soon, yes, but maybe not until next week. Busy weekend coming up!

'Til then, here's another picture for ya'; it's from last week's picnic as well, when we indulged in one of Rowan's favorite meals from "out." He loves the chicken and fruit cup. Yum.

Pictures are Back!

Ok, so, I finally gave up on using the photo software that came with my Mac, and installed the same photo software I was using before. Now, pictures of the day are back! I've decided to take one step to save me time, though: from now on, you won't see a little thumbnail "teaser" image on the right hand column of this blog. Instead, you'll see a thumbnail of the whole photo. I know it might take away some of the suspense, and maybe I'll go back to the other way at some point, but for now this cuts down my photo posting time by about half! So, I say it's a change well worth it. Enjoy the pictures. Hopefully it'll be a long time until our next photo-less day.

Rainforest

Yesterday Rowan and I biked into the state park as we've been doing lately. This time, though, instead of going to "our" lake, we went to a small river with a path alongside it. One main branch of the trail crosses over a cobblestone bridge here, about five miles from our house, and we parked the bike and walked along the river path. Because it had rained all morning and it was still very overcast, the forest was a bit dark and of course very damp. Rowan started taking off down the path energetically, and he shouted, "Row run!" I said, "Where is Rowan going?" And he said, "Into rainforest! Vamos!" This reference to his favorite television show in which Diego goes into the rainforest in nearly each episode, caught me so off guard that I don't think I even laughed until we were back home! Here's a picture from the excursion. I actually struggled a bit to decide whether to post it here or save it for a picture of the day, but I decided to go for immediate gratification. :-) Oh, and also, I know the background almost looks fake -- that's because I had to use the flash due to the very low lighting under all the trees. But I assure you, it's all real. (As are my very sore legs today from yesterday's exertion! At least it's a reminder of our fun little adventure.)

It's Gone.

I never dreamt what would be the topic of my first truly sobering conversation with Rowan. A balloon? Yes. A balloon.

You'll see on tomorrow's picture of the day that getting a balloon from our grocery store is a highlight of Rowan's week. He loves to choose the color, and often I think he asks for a color that isn't in the balloon corral just so the customer service person will have to blow one up for him and he can say, "Biiiiig! Biiiiig!" Well, yesterday we went to the grocery store, and the whole way there Rowan was talking about how he was going to get a pink balloon. There was one waiting for us in the balloon corral. He said, "That one!" and we tied it to our cart as we always do. He played with it while we shopped, bopped it around in the car on the way home, and brought it inside where he proceeded to play with it as he likes to do: by laying on it and bouncing. I've tried explaining to him that one day the balloon was going to pop it and there would be a loud noise that would scare him. Well, yesterday was the day for the popping, but the noise was a bit muted (probably by his body laying on it!) so the pop wasn't loud enough to scare anybody. However...

Rowan sat up, confused, and looked up in the air for his balloon. After all, it was underneath him, he knew, and now it wasn't. But, where could it be? Did it float away? He got up and walked into the laundry room to look. He said, "Find boon." I said, "Your balloon is right here, Rowan. It popped and these pieces are all that's left." He said, "No, find! Look pink boon! Find!" He walked through the house calling, "Boon? Boon! Pink boon!" I tried to explain it several different ways, but to no avail. Finally he returned to the kitchen where the remains of the ballon were still spread on the floor. I gathered them up and tried to piece them together to make them resemble a balloon shape. I pointed out the purple shiny ribbon that I hoped he would remember had been tied to his balloon, but now it was just tied to a little stub of pink balloon material. I said again that he didn't need to look for his balloon because it is right here, but that it is broken and we can't fix it. He looked down, very seriously, and said, "Boon all gone. Broken. Row found boon." And he walked away.

I cried.

However, I'm awfully glad I had this initial experience with a balloon instead of something (or someone) far more prized and beloved. I realize I have to brace myself for explaining the harshness of life to this beautiful baby boy. I guess like all parents I'll find my own way of coping with it. For now, I think I'll embrace the fact that the fleeting nature of existence, be it that balloon's or our own, is an important part of the value of our lives here on earth. Without the certainty of the last day here, I think each day before it would have much less meaning. I hope to impart the joy of that sadness to Rowan. Somehow.

Scary Afternoon

Rowan and I had an amazing day. He slept in, we had breakfast at a nearby cafe (those sweet potato biscuits are amazing). Then we came home and went for a beautiful bike ride to a lake we hadn't visited before. We played and played, saw horses, waved at passers-by, ate a banana on the bridge, and then I pedaled us home while Rowan slept. We had a fun lunch, played even more, and then we loaded into the car to run a few errands. It was snack time so I passed Rowan a few Cheerios. After eating them he started coughing, so I gave him some juice, but he just gave it back (which he never does). Within a few minutes he was crying and obviously in distress; when we stopped and I went back to get him, it was obvious he was wheezing and having trouble breathing. I was certain this had nothing to do with the Cheerios.

We went back home immediately where I gave him the inhaled medication he was prescribed over the winter when he would wheeze often with viruses. Although the symptoms were the same (noisy, labored, fast breathing), the onset was completely different: he had no fever and had not been sick at all. This came on suddenly and left suddenly: after the inhaler his breathing went back pretty much to normal. The only thing is he has hives! I called the pediatrician who agreed it's almost certainly an allergic reaction to something. We don't know what, but to me there were a several candidates: the first, pollen, seemed unlikely because we had spent so much time outside with no trouble earlier in the day. The second, peanut butter, had really been bothering me because I let Rowan taste some today for the very first time. I considered it a very low-risk thing to do since the pediatrician gave the all-clear a few months ago for Rowan to eat peanuts and shellfish and everything, and Tom and I don't have any food allergies. Because the peanut butter was over two hours prior to the reaction, though, it too seems an unlikely culprit. The final theory, and in my opinion the most plausible one, is that Rowan got bitten by an insect that caused this allergic reaction.

Anyway, the good news is that he was playing like normal almost immediately after the inhaler treatment and the rest of the evening was without incident. As you might imagine, though, I am not the most at-ease Mom in the world tonight! Still, it is quite late now, especially for me, and I must find a way to get some sleep. I think I'll be able to rest since the volume on Rowan's baby monitor is ridiculously high, so I'll hear it if he even rolls over loudly! If he makes any really loud sounds, I hope I don't wet the bed... ;-)

P.S., whaddya' think of that American Idol result, huh? I said I wouldn't be surprised either way, but then when Seacrest announced it I said to Tom, "Wow, I'm shocked!" Go figure.

Everyday Adventures

Happy Friday, everyone! Rowan and I are off for another fun-filled day. For your weekend viewing pleasure, I've posted a photo album from the last week or so of everyday adventures. Click here to view it.

Never knew!

I never knew Erin has some videos of Rowan and Ander on Youtube. Here's one from their trip to the nearby park to ride the boats!

And here's one from playing in the sandbox.

Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day, everyone. We've had a wonderful holiday, biking far into our state park with friends, and then spending the afternoon with Gram who just arrived for the week. Here's a movie from a couple of weeks ago by the lake where Rowan and I love to go. Enjoy!
